December

November 30, 2010 in archive by Hannah Goraya (York)

Hi All,

We  had a FAB event in October organised by the brilliant Emma Cooper and Erica Packington.

We had some ideas mooted for November, we’re sorry but it looks like they won’t come off (no doodah Dickens, right? Given I’m posting this on the last day of November!)

We were intending to link up with the general GIST activities for December but the idea behind-the-scenes is to have a ‘Christmas meal’ in January/ February to avoid inflicting further costs on gift-givers who, at this time of year, are pretty busy!

So, the suggestion I’ll be touting as loud as I can for the next week is as follows:

1) – We attend the GIST Magazine tomorrow night at the Showroom Cinema from 6:30pm and then head on to the Rutland Arms for their Christmas Lights being switched on.

2) We arrange another date that suits the majority in the near future and meet up and go out, dates that work for me are:

- Sunday 5th December (6-10pm)

- Thursday 9th December

- Friday 10th December

- Sunday 12th December

- Wednesday 15th December

- Thursday 16th December

- Friday 17th December

Let me know what suits and we’ll see what we can do. You can let me know via comments or via Hannah.York@thegistfoundation.org

Geek Girls Allowed LED Craft Hulapalooza (Mark I) (The First)

October 5, 2010 in archive by Emma Cooper

What: A blinking marvellous craft and electronics one day extravaganza
When: Saturday 23rd October, 11am – 5pm
Where: GIST Lab
Cost: £10

In the first of our “Making/Doing” Geek Girls Allowed sessions, we’d like to invite you to a day of technology, crafting and creativity. We’ll be using LEDs, fabrics, imagination and new skills to create cool stuff to amaze and inspire. We might even take to the streets of Sheffield to do a bit of Guerilla Illumination afterwards, if you fancy it.

Never knitted a stitch or soldered a wire before? Not a problem – we’ll have a range of activities, loads of support and a friendly expert or two to help us out.

There will a choice of projects ranging from very crafty to very electronic – and something in between. We’ll make sure there’s a mix to meet a variety of skills and interests. What’s more, we’ll provide all the equipment you need to create your very own electronic craft masterpiece, lunch* and lots of sustaining of tea and biscuits to aid inspiration.

As we will need equipment and materials to produce our blinking marvellous fancy fripperies, we are asking for £10 to cover costs – there’s a tip jar if you want to pitch a few pennies into the Geek Girls Allowed pot too.

So, if you are feeling inspired and ready to go, sign up with EventBrite.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

GGA

p.s. Legal disclaimer alert: We will be using power tools, so we’ll need to get you to sign a waiver when you arrive so everyone knows what’s what and agrees to safe behaviours. Do come prepared to sign, or we can’t let you near the fun stuff.

*let us know your dietary preferences when you SIGN UP

Join me for lunch and influence research into women’s careers in IT.

September 28, 2010 in events by Mel Kanarek

Hi everyone

I’m helping out a professor at Loughborough Uni who wants to do some in-depth research into women’s experiences as they pursue a career in IT/tech/digital.

She wants to make sure that she designs her research with reference to actual women’s experiences, so she has asked me to arrange a lunch-time discussion session. We’re going to hold it in Sheffield and the tentative date is 15th October – but we’ll change that to suit people’s diaries if necessary.

Everything discussed will be kept confidential and it will be a great opportunity to influence an important piece of research (and eat a nice lunch in some good company). If you are interested in taking part, please could you either email me (melanie@tigernash.co.uk) or tweet me @melkanarek.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

In my haste to post about last night’s event (I’m a bad blogger), I forgot to mention the interactive art work presented by Barnsley artist Jo Pearson. Jo based her work on the iChing – instructions at the table told us how to cast an iChing hexagram relating to a question we had in mind. We [...]

Had a most marvelous evening yesterday at the Barnsley Digital Media Centre and the first ever South Yorkshire Geek Girls Dinner. To those GGals who didn’t make it, you missed an excellent evening, two impressive speakers and some epic chocolate cake. Kudos to Tracey Johnson (@cre8tvebarnsley) for organising. I didn’t get the opportunity to meet everyone [...]

ThumbnailGeek Girls Allowed in Sheffield has been puttering along now for 5 months or so. There’s been a lot of attendees to some events and not so many to others. There’s a core group who seem to show up regardless of event and we’ve been starting to wonder a few things. What it is that we’re doing as a group? [...]

Hi All, In advance please excuse the lack of formatting, in a bit of a rush today… As posted by Mel in the forum earlier this week the next GGA event is:

‘Geek Girls Allowed do Lunch’ Thurs 29th April, 12noon to 2pm, Electric Works. Bring a picnic! Pretty informal social with an open opportunity to [...]
