Hope things are progressing build wise.Still tinkering with Arduino connected to the occult world.

Just to confirm that the next meeting date is the 30th January 2012, GIST Lab doors open from 6:45 please sign up here: http://bit.ly/shh1201 if you’re coming along.
February and March dates (if you want to get them in the diaries) are:
27 Feb
26 MarSee you soon,
Hannah
Hannah – I’m definitely interested in coming along to the 30th January meeting, would it be OK if I brought my daughter along? She’s 6 years old but well-behaved and I think she’d be interested. Thought I’d ask, because I’ve not attended one of your events before and I’m not sure how child-friendly they are.
Hi Ed,
Thanks for getting in touch. You’d be more than welcome to come along but please do sign up for tickets here: http://bit.ly/shh1201
Your daughter is more than welcome to come along but we operate on a volunteer, unfunded basis so any children coming along must be looked after by the parent or guardian who brings them along. We have a had children along to the events before, in fact Aaron (13) is racing ahead of most of the grown ups designing parts for the machine, so they’re more than welcome and there’s things to do but they have to stay with/ near Dad or Mum.
Just so that you know what to expect though, our machine isn’t working. If you’re wanting your daughter to come along and see a working machine, it’ll be a bit of a let down (it’s happened before). We can show her you tube videos etc and talk about what we’re doing etc but there won’t be any printing pieces off this month.Should be going soon enough so if you’d prefer to come along then you’d be welcome, but if it’s more just meeting the group letting us know about you and your interest in RepRaps and getting to know us the more the merrier.

Hi Richard,
Yes we’re still active and we were just saying the other day how nice it would be to see you and one of your machines!

RepRap: 1 month, 4 weeks ago · updated 1 month, 3 weeks ago · ViewHeya All…
*warning* Rambling post ahead… Just wanted to say a quick thankyou, particularly to Andy and to Chris Palmerry, but to all the regular attendees of the build days. I bumped into Andy today as I walked up paradise street and he called me in to show me the parts that have been printed to mount the PCB on the lab reprap. This was significant, because Andy set my Son, AJ the task of designing these parts using some 3d modelling software called openscad.
Whilst I love what the reprap group are doing, I have to confess that I’m usually drowning under a thousand other things, and I do have a tenancy to being AJ into the lab and drop him on the reprap group. So my first thanks is to Andy for always finding something at the right level of both difficulty and interest to keep him occupied.. It’s a truly special skill, and it’s deeply appreciated.
On a more generic note tho… and this is the thing that I think is really important… It occurs to me that it might be possible to buy a reprap kit with completely off the shelf parts, assemble it, and start printing. Whilst I agree that the point of this is to get to a working 3d printer, there’s always a part of me that thinks the journey is as important as the destination. When we get the lab reprap running, it’ll be something that genuinely contains a part of everyone who’s been involved, not in some odd metaphysical way, but in a concrete manner. Really, all I wanted to say was thanks to everyone.. I’m aware it’s possible to just buy a reprap kit, but the way the build is going on at the lab seems to exemplify everything that I hoped we might achieve in the lab.
thanks so much to everyone, this has made a real difference to AJ and to me!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianibbo/6477410995/in/photostreamwhile I don’t really qualify to say ”you’re welcome” since I’m not a ”regular attendee” of the build days, but I had to comment on this to say that I think you have one really exceptionally active and talented son, I met AJ on the 3rd of Dec build day and I actually felt embarrassed that he can manipulate that so called openscad while I – 10 years older – got stuck many times trying to learn how to draw a line in it, I’ve actually asked him that maybe he can give me a hand on it some time on one of those meetings since it looks like a program with some promising potentials

RepRap: 3 months ago · updated 2 months ago · ViewHow did the build day go? i was going to come and bring my machine but i broke it the day before so need to order some new bits.
From what I can tell, it looks like some progress was made. Didn’t make it there myself, but I have seen the results so far. Looking good.
Hi Rory,
Sorry for the delay, the build day was good we had another on the 3rd December and the machine really started to take shape at that point which was nice (as it can sometimes feel a bit one step forward two steps back). Chris (Nophead) came along with his Mendel90 which I think we’re all agreed looks like a nice way forward although we’re persevering with our Prusa Mendel just so we can get it done and learn the full process. How’s your machine going?
The next meeting is the 30th January as we’re giving our bruised fingers and thumbs a break for Christmas.
Hope you’re well,
Hannah

RepRap: 3 months, 1 week ago · ViewNotes from tonight’s meeting:
- The BIG build day is Saturday 29th, there are 6 builder tickets and the day will start 08:00 and run till 17:00, please register for a ticket if you wish to join us. (If there’s lots of demand I’m sure more tickets can be released we’ve just set them at that as a realistic group size for how many parts of the machine there are to work on)
Self-builders (i.e. people with their own machines) are welcome to join us, we have space for 5-6 other machines, so if you want to join us and show off your working machine or join us in progressing your build, either way it’d be great to meet you and see what you’re working on.
Also, if you’re under confident about bashing our machine or don’t want to build but do want to say ’hello’ then we have a drop in ticket too. Please do sign up though so we know you’re coming.
So, to tonight’s event, mainly the focus was on what was needed for Saturday:(1) Screwdrivers – please bring your own.
(2) Heat proof sleeve
(3) Wire (for connecting stepper motors)
(4) Battery drill (& related bits)
(5) Firmware for Sanguino Lolou
(6) Flat plastic plate cut out to strengthen end plates

RepRap: 3 months, 2 weeks ago · ViewAn observation; 1030 to 1300 on Saturday is only 2 and a half hours. I know there is the afternoon too but as is well known, tempus fugits faster on Saturday afternoons. Is there really so little to do to finish off? I think it would be worth considering an earlier start, say 0800? And not stop until it’s finished…

RepRap: 3 months, 2 weeks ago · ViewJust had this from a possible attendee on Monday:
Suggestions for discussion on Monday, in no particular order and not wishing to be too prescriptive:
Getting firm commitment for enough builders to turn up on Saturday.
Assessing current state and determine how long it will take, based on other RepRap builds, to complete. Set a timetable, or at least agree concern/worry/panic timelines.
Ensuring we will have all the pieces and tools needed.
Maybe break down, agree and allocate sub-builds to individuals/groups; eg nozzle assembly, software, frame and motors, etc.
Any more suggestions? Please add them here before Monday.
